6 Steps on How to Grow Your Own Vegetables the Organic Way

Tending to your organic garden need not be difficult if you plan well ahead, and follow the proper guidelines. This article is about how to care for your organic vegetable garden by following a simple 6 step guideline.

Step 1 – Planning

The first thing you should do is to make up your mind about what vegetables you would like to grow. Although there are a variety of vegetables for you to choose from, the climate you live in is the determining factor that limits the types of vegetables for you to choose from. To avoid having to deal with problems in the future, choose types that are suited to the temperature and soil conditions of your garden.

If you live in an area where dry weather is frequent, you have to plant vegetables that do not need much water and can withstand the dry weather.

Space is another factor to consider. If possible, draw up a layout plan of the types of vegetables and where you want each type of vegetable to be grown. Be sure to include in your layout plan, the direction of the sun and where the sunny and shady areas are.

Step 2 – Preparing

The soil needs to be properly prepared in order for your vegetables to thrive and grow. You can use dead leaves, dried grass, food waste and manure to mulch the ground. Mulching helps to keep the soil moist, provides the much needed humus and nutrients, and discourages the growth of weeds. Do not dig very deep when putting in the mulch or compost (as it is also called), because most vegetable plants have shallow roots.

Organic gardening requires that you only use organic matter in the form of manure or mulch to help your vegetables grow healthily. However, if you find that preparing compost is too tedious for you, then you could also use organic fertilizers prepared commercially. But to be honest, nothing compares to the benefits of using compost because mulch creates an ideal environment that encourages earthworms to aerate and condition the soil. It also contains higher natural soil nutrients than commercial fertilizers.

Step 3 – Controlling

As we all know, the biggest problem we have to deal with when growing vegetables organically is pest control. The environmentally friendly method of dealing with pests is by using birds, frogs or other insects to feed on these pests. Understandably, pests can sometimes be difficult to control especially when they have become widespread. In such a situation, you can spray your vegetables with diluted soapy water followed by another spray of clear water. This method is very effective and will prevent your vegetables from any toxic build up. As you may be aware, synthetic pesticides contain toxins which could be harmful for consumption. Organically grown vegetables are wholesome and free from any toxins. At all costs, refrain from using any commercial pesticide.

Insects may also be a problem. One way deter insects is by growing a variety of vegetables. However, in general insects are not harmful. In fact most insects are beneficial to plants. Insects such as ladybugs, fireflies, spiders and wasps help devour the pests that eat your vegetables. They also help pollinate your plants and decompose organic matter.

Step 4 – Transferring

When you need to transfer seedlings from their plastic containers into the soil, make sure you remove them carefully so that you do not tear the outer roots and damage them. Place them gently into the soil with their roots compact. Do not shake or loosen the roots as this may cause plant-shock and the seedlings will then die off.

Step 5 – Weeding

Anyone will tell you that a healthy garden is one that is free from weeds. Hence, regular weeding is essential to ensure your vegetables grow healthily. Pull out the weeds by hand or spot spray them with full strength vinegar. This is a better alternative than using regular pesticide which is harmful for the environment and your vegetables as well.

To prevent weeds from growing, do not plant your vegetables too deep into the ground. Doing this will damage the vegetable roots, dry out the soil and disrupt the healthy soil organisms. This disruption will also cause weeds to surface and germinate.

Step 6 – Rotating

Lastly, you need to ensure that you do not deplete your soil. To ensure that your soil remains fertile, it is good to practice crop rotation. Crop rotation simply means that you plant a different type of vegetable in the same plot after the first crop is harvested. Doing so gives the soil time to replenish its lost nutrients. In this way, you are helping to maintain the fertility level of the soil.
